News from the H41 Sill-Pfons Gorge construction site: TBM 'Lilia' crosses the 'Werner' fault zone and reaches 6 km of excavation

After Ida, Lilia is also celebrating a double milestone: she has successfully passed the 'Werner' fault zone and reached 6 km of excavation. Now the TBM is preparing for the final rush: the last 2.1 km to Navis.

News that will make the children of the St. Peter-Ellbögen primary school happy, who chose the name 'Lilia' for the tunnel boring machine: the machine is now two-thirds of the way south. Started on 2 May 2023, with its 10.4 m diameter, it has already passed the 'Viggartal', 'Walzn' and now also 'Werner' fault zones.

"We are talking about a very good performance by Ida and Lilia, who have both passed the two-thirds mark and are approaching the Navis municipal area. But in addition to excavating, the TBMs are also assembling the tubbing rings along the tunnel", explains Romed Insam, project manager of the 'H41 Sill-Pfons Gorge' construction lot.

An important aspect that is made even more sustainable by the fact that the tubbing rings are produced on site. This process avoids approximately 27,000 lorry transports, reducing environmental impact and emissions, in harmony with the delicate Alpine ecosystem.

The name 'Lilia' comes from the Latin "lilium", the lily, symbol of purity. A purity that recalls the quality of the air in the Alpine valleys and which the project aims to preserve for future generations. Those same children who have christened Lilia will one day be the passengers who will travel through these beautiful valleys, crossing Austria and Italy in the name of more sustainable transport.
