TBM Lilia started work on May 2nd 2023 and has already passed the critical fault zones known as 'Viggartal' and 'Walzn'. Lilia completed her first 3 km of excavation work on Saturday, June 15th. 348.900 m³ of rock was excavated. The TBM is now ready to face the new challenges ahead with confidence, as it will excavate the remaining 5.4 km to reach its goal.
Ivan Zamberlan, lot controller at the H41 Sill Gorge-Pfons site, expresses his satisfaction with Ida's progress. "After getting past the "Viggartal" and "Walzn" fault zones, TBM Lilia completed her first 3 km of excavation work. As with its predecessor Ida, this is a great satisfaction and a great achievement, for which we must first of all congratulate the construction workers who work every day on this important project in the heart of the mountains".
Lilia drives through the mountain and sets up the final lining of the tunnel
TBM Lilia is not only moving southwards, she is also installing the tubbing rings: the precast concrete elements that form the final lining of the tunnel. Each ring consists of six concrete segments weighing a total of approximately 60 tonnes each.
So far, some 20,000 tubbing rings have been laid in the two main tunnels. All of the tubbing rings were produced by the site's own factory, thus sparing the environment the approximately 27,000 heavy vehicle transports required to move the tubbing rings.
For this reason, environmental sustainability also plays an important role in the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. It is indeed a project that will help to transform mobility in Europe. In the meantime, during the construction phase, great attention is paid to protect the natural habitats affected by the project.
