Riol: the final lot of the BBT project, for safer and more sustainable local road traffic

In the township of Fortezza, just a few yards away from the southern portal to the Brenner Base Tunnel, works are under way on the H81 construction lot, building new roadways in the Riol neighbourhood. These strategic construction measures will not only provide better roadways for local residents, they will also provide improved access for emergency teams servicing the Verona-Brenner rail line.

The construction site is just south of the H71 Isarco River Underpass lot which was completed in December of 2023. The works have been awarded to the Unionbau-Brunner & Leiter consortium and began in the second half of January 2025. The works are expected to last approximately 25 months, with a total investment of about EUR 13 million.

The project is divided into two sublots: the first includes the construction of a new railway underpass (a concrete box that will be produced elsewhere and then inserted into the understructure of the Brenner rail line) that will create a road connection between the SS12 state road and the neighbourhood of Riol. The second part will involve the extension and improvement of the existing underpass for cyclist and pedestrian traffic and will be primarily for bike traffic. The excavated materials will be almost completely recycled on-site, especially in the construction of reinforced earthworks that will separate the railway from the residential neighbourhood to the east and will have not only a walking path but also lots of greenery and vegetation which will also improve local biodiversity.

The construction site is located between the northern portal of the Fortezza - Ponte Gardena rail line and the southern portal of the BBT. These works will re-connect Riol with the centre of Fortezza and complete the roads already partly built in the previous lot. The goal is to improve the accessibility of the Riol neighbourhood and, at the same time, also promote sustainable mobility.

And furthermore, as Construction Manager Antonio Spaziani adds: “The works being built in this lot, which thanks to careful planning will blend beautifully into the landscape, will also significantly improve the access roads for emergency teams and vehicles during the operational phase of the Brenner Base Tunnel. This is an important lot for the new railway line and it also improves the roadways available to the local residents”.
