The Ministers for Transport of Italy and Austria and the EU Commissioner for Transport tour the BBT construction sites

Steinach am Brenner / Fortezza - The Italian and Austrian Ministers for Transport, Paola De Micheli and Leonore Gewessler, and the EU Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean toured the construction sites for the Brenner Base Tunnel, 120 km of which have already been excavated.

The delegations visited the Wolf construction site in Steinach am Brenner in Austria and the Isarco River Underpass site near Fortezza in Italy.

On-site, the guests were joined by the CEOs of BBT SE, Gilberto Cardola and Martin Gradnitzer, by EU-Coordinator Pat Cox, the governors of Tyrol and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano Günther Platter and Arno Kompatscher, Herbert Kasser and Lamberto Cardia of the BBT SE Supervisory Board and the General Director of ÖBB Andreas Matthä and RFI CEO Maurizio Gentile.

Commissioner Vălean emphasised the European dimension of the project: all of Europe has a part in building this infrastructure which will give an enormous push to European integration, saying: “I am very impressed by these construction sites; I couldn’t have imagined the size of this work if I hadn’t seen it for myself. The work being carried out here is most extraordinary and it is the result of real cooperation between Member States.”

During the tours, the current status of the works was presented, as were environmental preservation measures and the next phases of the works in the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel.
