THE ADVANTAGES OF THE BBT

With a maximum gradient of 4-7 ‰, the BBT runs almost flat and straight beneath the state border, thus meeting the standards of a modern high-speed line for passenger and freight transport.  Together with the access lines from Munich to Verona, it will set the course for the future of European rail transport. The Brenner Base Tunnel will not only bring Alto Adige and Tyrol and the area between Munich and Verona in general significantly closer together, but will also involve major economic, social and cultural benefits:

  • The Brenner Base Tunnel will reduce the travel time between Innsbruck and Fortezza from 1.5 hours to 25 minutes. This will make it possible, for example, to study or work in Alto Adige or Tyrol and return home every day.
  • The BBT will enable cross-border, non-stop rail traffic between Alto Adige and Tyrol: It will no longer be necessary to stop at Brenner to wait for connecting trains, a change of locomotive or train crew.
  • Thanks to the Brenner Base Tunnel, trains will no longer have to take the steep and winding route across the Alps. Instead, they will travel almost straight on an almost flat line through the mountain. This will allow longer and heavier trains to be used, making transport easier and more efficient, making the railway a competitive mode of transport and a valid alternative to road freight transport.
  • This will reduce road congestion and the negative impact of traffic on the environment, air quality and quality of life.
