The new Info point near the Central Station – 150 square metres of tunnel atmosphere In the BBT Info point, visitors can dive into the fascinating experi- ence of tunnel construction and take an interactive look at one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. Route plan The route plan in this orthophoto- graph shows the route of the Brenner Base Tunnel. LED lights show the current progress of the route. Rocks in the Brenner Massif The geological longitudinal profile runs through the rock mass along the tunnel route. The feasibility of the tunnel was evaluated thanks to about 29 km of prospection boreholes drilled from the surface to the level of the tunnel. The excavation of the tunnel tubes runs through four main types of rock mass (quartz phyllites, Bündner schists, Central gneiss and Brixner granite). Based on exhibition pieces and borehole cores, the visitors can see these rocks up close. „Vor der Hacke ist es dunkel“ – literally, “it’s dark in front of my pickaxe”. This old miner’s saying means that in spite of all these prospection activities, the only way to know exactly what kind of rock mass will be found is to actually dig the tunnel. Progress of the works and activities underground: Building what will be the longest underground railway tunnel in the world requires many, many different types of technicians, machines and materials. Pictures show us this underground world: excavation by blasting, machine excavation and the inner lining of the tunnel. Progress of the works and activities above ground: The Sill gorge is shown as a model after its completion. Pictures illustrate the area of Innsbruck Central Station and the status of the works on the disposal areas. You can also see the transformer station under construction near the Brenner Highway at Zenzenhof and the environmental compensation measures that have already been implemented.
