The Brenner Base Tunnel - a new link through the Alps

TBM start-up ceremony for the exploratory Ahrental - Pfons tunnel on September, 25 th 2015 The desire for a modern and environmentally friendly means of goods transport on the main north-south route through the Alps can only come to pass through the construction of a high-speed route through the Brenner massif, the Brenner Base Tunnel. The Brenner Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel that runs from Innsbruck to Fortezza, and together with the existing Innsbruck bypass it is 64 km long. Thus, far below the Brenner Pass, the longest underground railway connection in the world is being built. Excluding the Innsbruck bypass tunnel, the tunnel is 55 kilometres long from Innsbruck to Fortezza. The Brenner Base Tunnel is considered a pioneering engineering achievement of the 21st century and will lead to a marked improvement in the travel and transportation systems in the heart of Europe.
