The Brenner Base Tunnel - a new link through the Alps
7 Built in 1867, the Brenner railway line has a capacity of 260 trains per day and runs over the mountain pass on a route with slopes as steep as 26‰. To meet the transportation needs of the 21st century, it is necessary to expand and develop the existing stretch of rail. The existing route via the Brenner - steep gradients, exhausted capacity A “Rollende Landstraße” (rolling road) train at St. Jodok am Brenner. Here the trains gain height via a large bend around the village and in a 481-meter-long loop tunnel. The image gives an idea of the steep ascent of the Brenner north ramp. The Brenner Base Tunnel will decrease journey time and therefore release capacity for local transport on the existing line. Railways to the future
