The Brenner Base Tunnel - a new link through the Alps
36 BBT SE is setting up the largest disposal site for the excavated material in the project area in the Padaster- tal, a valley leading off the Wipptal valley. Approximately 7.7 million cubic metres of excavated material will be deposited there. This corresponds to approximately half of the total excavated material in the Austrian project area. A number of measures were necessary for the establishment of the Padastertal disposal site. First, a 1,500-metre- long diversion tunnel was built for the Padaster brook. The diversion of the Padaster brook was a prerequisite for building the disposal site, as during the construction and disposal phase the brook will flow through the diversion tunnel. Current view of the Padaster valley: The construction (bulk tunnels, reservoirs, etc.) is completed; the depositing of excavated material is in progress. After the depositing of excavated material is completed the Padaster valley will be fully transformed (reforestation, new stream course, ecological compensation areas, etc.). From V-valley to U-valley
