The Brenner Base Tunnel - a new link through the Alps

16 Innsbruck Tulfes Fortezza emergency stop St. Jodok emergency stop Innsbruck emergency stop Trens The Brenner Base Tunnel incorporates the latest safety standards. The emergency stops are each 470 meters long and are connected to a central tunnel at 90-metre intervals. Extract- ed air connecting tunnels are offset by 45 metres, so that they are also located every 90 metres. The central tunnel is provided with an intermediate ceiling that divides the central tunnels into an upper and lower half. Between the two main tunnels and the central tunnel, exhaust air ducts crosscut with exhaust air dampers are located in the upper half of the central tunnel, whereas the lower half of the central tunnel holds connecting tunnels fitted with escape doors. Connecting tunnels link the east and west tube of the Brenner Base Tunnel every 333 meters. These cross-ways serve as an emergency escape route. The safety plan also includes the construction of three emergency stops, located south of Innsbruck, below St. Jodok and Trens, at a distance of approximately 20 kilometres from each other.
