On December 16th, 2004, the company Galleria di Base del Brennero - Brenner Basistunnel BBT SE (in Latin, a Societas Europaea, meaning a European public limited-liability company) was founded as the successor company to the BBT EEIG.

The company, as mandated by the Republics of Austria and Italy and the European Union (EU), is concerned with the planning and construction of the main element of the trans-European railway axis Berlin-Verona/Milan-Bologna-Naples-Messina-Palermo, that is, the Brenner Base Tunnel. This is at the top of the EU list of the priority TEN projects.

The European public limited-liability company BBT SE is structured as follows: The shares are half Austrian- and half Italian-owned.In Austria, 25% of shares are owned by the Land Tyrol, while the Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) holds 25% . In Italy, the 50% quota is held by Tunnel Ferroviario del Brennero Società Finanziaria di partecipazione; 84,08 % of these shares are, in turn, held by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI – the Italian railway company) and 6,15 % each by the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano and Trento, with 3,62 % held by the Province of Verona. The project is co-financed by the European Union.

The main headquarters of the company, headed by the CEOs Dott.-Ing. Ezio Facchin und Univ.-Prof. DI DDr. Konrad Bergmeister, is located in Innsbruck. A branch office is located in Bolzano.

The currently largest railway tunnel project in Europe is meant to blaze the way for the gradual shift of goods traffic from road to rail in the coming decades. This requires policy changes and the introduction of a uniform toll policy in the traffic corridor from Munich to Verona and over the Alpine arc. An efficient new railway with the Brenner base tunnel and its access routes will make the sought-after shift of heavy freight traffic from road to rail possible. Besides the new railway, however, freight handling terminals along the line will also be needed.

To optimize the existing rail line and create a coordinated general policy framework for the freight traffic shift, the Brenner Corridor Platform was established in Spring of 2007.  The members of this working group, five regions and three railway companies along the Munich-Verona route, mean to efficiently advance these issues.

This project is cofinanced by the European Union from the budget of the Transeuropean Transport Networks (TEN-T).
